In 1991 the
village of
Blumau was a totally different sight than it is now. Predominantly agricultural, the municipality had no real infrastructure and very little prospect of change. While drilling for oil, a thermal spring was discovered and promptly recapped as uninteresting. Nevertheless this was to spark a hope in the municipality which, despite much opposition from the high-ups, was eventually to win through to make Bad Blumau the popular spa resort that it is today.
An excellent example of a municipality finding its identity together: Although it was not always a journey paved with roses as farm land had to be transformed to make way for Friedenreich Hundertwasser’s vision of buildings living in harmony with their natural environment. Even a main road found itself in the way and was consequently “diverted”. The community of Blumau won its accolade as “Bad” – spa town in 2001. In spite of the relatively rapid rise to fame traditions and culture, flora and fauna, education and locally generated economy have not been left behind. As well as the spa complex, the community of Bad Blumau is very engaged in developing national park land involving the youth, celebrating the natural resources and biodiversity as well as promoting small scale local tourism.
